Glass, a resource within arm's reach... if the glass gesture is adopted!

For the French, glass is king! If they were to select a single container material, glass tops the list, according to a recent survey* on the perception of container glass, which also highlights its two unchallenged advantages for consumers: naturalness and neutrality, two criteria that the French are virtually unanimous.

The positive image of glass is deeply anchored in the French: they love the beauty of glass containers (77%), which enhance their contents, as well as the mark of authenticity that glass conveys (69%). Glass is also popular with the "ecofriendly" group. According to nearly 75% of the consumers questioned, glass containers are synonymous with quality, traditional products. Three-fourths of the French believe that glass is healthier and more hygienic than other container materials, particularly the seniors (55-75).While most of the French have a superficial knowledge of recycling and its benefits, they are also very unequally motivated by selective sorting. They consider themselves good sorters, regardless of the material. Yet their familiarity with recycling proves to be very unequal when one digs deeper. This is true regardless of the material, but with a slight advantage for glass. The persons questioned have a hard time arguing about the ecological benefits of recycling (proportion of collected material re-used, energy conservation). While the perceptions and the image associated with glass are favourable and positive, they emphasize the necessary information and motivation of young adults, who are apparently disinclined to pass the values of recycling on to their children as much as would be hoped. They demonstrate how important it is to mobilize all the players to perpetuate and intensify the Glass Gesture: this resource within arm's reach.
